Jeremy Bass Takes Helm of PFM’s Higher Education Practice

Managing Director Jeremy Bass has been tapped to head PFM’s industry leading Higher Education practice. He replaces Managing Director June Matte who will now devote her attention to developing international opportunities for PFM.

“This practice has grown and developed over time and Jeremy has grown and developed with it,” Matte said. “He started in this business 17 years ago working for me, and for these past few years he’s been my partner. It’s a total delight to be able to turn this business over to him so that he can guide it forward into the next phase of the higher education evolution.”

The practice provides a full range of financial advisory services, including governance, strategy and the execution of capital financings. In addition, the practice focuses on alternative financing solutions, asset management, treasury consulting and strategic long-range planning through PFM’s unique software, Whitebirch1.

“We want to be solvers of our clients’ problems,” Bass said. “Higher education is a sector that is largely facing headwinds these days for a variety of reasons. We feel that it is our job to not only transact for them but to be their partner in providing advice to move them forward on whatever challenges may exist. We are a national practice that cuts across the suite of services that complement PFM’s platform.”

The higher education practice has grown into a very different operation than when it began in the early 1990s.

“Our clients have become more complex; they run many more businesses inside their institutions so the type of advice they need is much more sophisticated than it used to be,” Bass said. “We listen to what our clients ask for. We help them think about what their institution is going to look like five years from now. Our approach is holistic where we look at both sides of the balance sheet tapping into our expertise to add value to our client’s mission.”

Securities Data Corporation data show PFM has advised on more higher education transactions than any other firm for 19 of the last 20 years as of March 31, 2018. The practice services clients ranging from large public and private research institutions to smaller tuition dependent schools. Among the clients served on the public side are the University System of Maryland, the University of Illinois, the Pennsylvania State University; and the University of Oregon and on the private side, Williams College, Rice University, Georgetown University and Bucknell University2.
